GPS

Postby Quinn » Sun May 02, 2010 11:32 am

Well, after years of mainly just wandering around and route finding by trial and error, I'm finally going to get a GPS unit that I can mount on the bike. I have researched this to death, there is a bunch of info on the Advrider site. I think I'll get the Garmin GPSMap 60cx. It seems to be a popular model with the Advrider crowd and the prices are comming down dramatically lately.

Does anyone here use a GPS for dual sport riding? If so which model and how do you use it? For example do you just use it for a mobile map, POIs, routing, do you download and follow tracks? Any info will be appreciated.
Beware the man who rides only one motorcycle, he's probably pretty good at it.

You should get a hold of Dana (devaclis), he is the GPS guru. I was thinking of getting a handheld to mount on the bars eventually too.

I have been looking into this also...the problem is I want to pick my route (during the off season) on Google then upload it to my future GPS...the limitation with most of the GPS units is the lack of flexability of doing this simple task. I am told many are limited by the maps (street vs trail) and how many way points you can select between destinations. I already bought one and then returned it just because of this limitation. I would be interested in hearing what other have to say.

Oh by the way forget trying to talk to Garmin...they don't return calls or emails..yet they own the industry or so I am told.

I will like to use mine for the same thing. For instance, I'm planning to ride the Grand Loop in Western Colorado and Eastern Utah this summer. I would like to download, if that is the correct term, a track of this trail from the internet and then use it to navigate the trail once I'm there. As best as I can understand, the Garmin GPS Map 60 can do this function but if you want to overlay the downloaded track onto an actual detailed map the map must be purchaced from Garmin separately. Acording to Garmin once you have the map software on your computer you can draw a route on the map then load it onto the GPS, I don't know if it will work in Google though. Another feature of this unit that I think may be of use to me is the POI-Points of Interest data base. Sometimes when I wandering around in remote places it would be nice to know where the nearest gas station or motel is.

Let me know how it works out for sure. After this weekend I realized how nice they are to have.
